You can play chess with a friend face-to-face in Hotseat mode, turning a single smartphone into a shared chessboard. Just pass the device kinetically back and forth after each move. To activate this mode, tap the [••] button located below the chessboard. A red border will appear around the button, also displaying '2P' (2 players) — that confirms you are in Hotseat mode. You can switch between playing against the computer and Hotseat mode at any point during a game. Hotseat mode is designed for playing an intense, personal, and deeply focused game of chess with a friend, your child, or teaching your child chess — a fantastic way to connect and share an oldschool quiet, strategic moment.

You can leverage the [••] button's mode-switching ability to get AI advice or switch sides mid-game when playing chess vs computer. While the combination of the [••] mode switch and the [↶] rollback buttons gives even more control over the game flow, including AI assistance to find out how the AI will play out your position. Note that in Hotseat mode, the rollback button undoes one move at a time, while in Versus-Computer mode, it rolls back the last two moves (yours and the computer's). This difference is the key to the trick, and here is the how-to: Tap the [••] button to switch to Hotseat (2P) mode. Use the [↶] rollback button to undo the computer's last move, or a few moves — since you are in Hotseat mode, the rollback is exactly one move at a time. When the computer's pieces to move, tap the [••] button again to switch back to Versus-Computer mode, and it is now your move but you already play the other side. Then the AI takes over your pieces! — this allows you to find out how the AI will play out your position!
